The most surprising thing has been the lack of public recognition of how close we are to the end of the exponential. To me it is absolutely wild that you have people talking about just the same tired old hot button political issues.

Scaling reinforcement learning and the puzzle of human learning efficiency

The core drivers of AI progress remain consistent with a theory developed years ago called the Big Blob of Compute. This hypothesis suggests that specific clever techniques or new methods are less important than a few fundamental factors. These factors include the amount of raw compute, the quantity and distribution of data, and the duration of training. A scalable objective function is also vital, whether it involves pre-training on text or using reinforcement learning for specific goals like math or coding. The scaling laws observed in language models are now appearing in reinforcement learning as well.

The hypothesis is basically the same. All the cleverness, all the techniques, all the kind of 'we need a new method to do something' like that doesn't matter very much. There are only a few things that matter.

A significant puzzle remains regarding sample efficiency. Humans learn from far less data than AI models, which require trillions of tokens. This difference suggests that AI training is not a direct analog to human learning. Dario suggests that pre-training and reinforcement learning exist in a middle space between human evolution and immediate learning. While the human brain starts with complex biological structures and priors, an AI starts as a blank slate with random weights. The training process effectively builds the foundation that evolution provides to humans.

Maybe we should think of pre training and for that matter RL as well as being something that exists in the middle space between human evolution and kind of human on the spot learning.

In-context learning allows models to adapt quickly once they are trained, similar to short-term human learning. However, the foundational training is still necessary to establish the underlying capabilities. The different phases of AI development fall at different points along a spectrum of learning, even if they do not match human modes exactly.

The role of verifiability in AGI development timelines

This process mirrors early pre-training where models eventually learned to complete patterns they had never seen before. The goal is not to teach the model every possible skill within RL. It is rather that the model trains on a lot of things and then it reaches generalization. I saw this transition up close where the model reaches a point where you give it a list of numbers and it completes the pattern.

Regarding the timeline for advanced AI, Dario is very confident about the next decade. He estimates a 90 percent chance that we will see AI capabilities equal to a country of geniuses within a data center by 2035. The small margin of doubt comes from external factors like geopolitical instability or the difficulty of automating tasks that cannot be easily verified.

Verifiability is a major factor in how quickly different fields will be automated. Coding is highly verifiable, and Dario expects AI to handle end-to-end software engineering very soon. Tasks that require long-term planning or fundamental discovery are more challenging because their success is harder to measure immediately.

There is no way we will not be there in ten years in terms of being able to do end-to-end coding. My one bit of fundamental uncertainty is this thing about tasks that aren't verifiable, like planning a mission to Mars or writing a novel.

AI models are already writing the vast majority of code in many environments. However, there is a massive difference between a model writing 90% of code lines and replacing 90% of software engineers. The impact of AI exists on a spectrum. It starts with writing snippets, moves to handling end-to-end tasks like compiling and testing, and eventually reaches a point where it can manage today's engineering workloads. Even at that stage, engineers may shift to higher-level management roles rather than losing their jobs entirely.

There is a spectrum where 90% of code is written by the model, then 100% of code is written by the model. That is a big difference in productivity. Even when 100% of today's tasks are written by models, it does not mean software engineers are out of a job. There are new higher level things they can do where they can manage.

The speed of this transition is reflected in the rapid revenue growth of AI companies. Anthropic has seen roughly 10x annual growth, moving from 100 million to a billion and then toward 10 billion. While this exponential growth cannot last forever, it signals a much faster adoption rate than previous technologies. Despite this speed, adoption is not instant. This lag is often due to economic diffusion. Even if a tool like Claude Code is easy to set up, large enterprises must navigate legal hurdles, security compliance, and internal change management.

I think everything we have seen so far is compatible with the idea that there is one fast exponential that is the capability of the model, and then there is another fast exponential that is downstream of that, which is the diffusion of the model into the economy. Not instant, not slow, much faster than any previous technology, but it has its limits.

Some argue that AI should diffuse instantly because it lacks the friction of hiring humans. An AI can read an entire company drive in minutes and does not require the same vetting as a new employee. While AI adoption is indeed faster, real-world complexity still slows things down. A large pharmaceutical or financial company cannot roll out a tool to thousands of developers overnight. They have to provision it, explain its value to multiple leadership levels, and integrate it into existing legacy systems. This middle world is one where progress is extremely fast but still requires time to close the loop on complicated human systems.

The limits of AI growth and the state of AGI

AI products are evolving quickly, but there are limits to their impact. Dario suggests that even AGI or a powerful AI system would not be an infinitely compelling product. It could drive annual growth of three to ten times for companies worth hundreds of billions of dollars. This would be a unique event in history. No company of that size has ever grown so fast. I don't think even AGI or powerful AI or country of geniuses in the data center will be an infinitely compelling product. It will be a compelling product, enough maybe to get 3 or 5 or 10x a year growth even when you're in the hundreds of billions of dollars, which is extremely hard to do and has never been done in history before.

Dario also clarifies that we have not reached AGI yet. He uses the metaphor of a "country of geniuses in a data center" to describe such a system. If this technology were available, it would be impossible to miss. Everyone from industry experts to government leaders in Washington would know about it. The lack of such widespread recognition shows that AGI is not yet a reality.

If you had the country of geniuses in a data center, everyone in this room would know it. Everyone in Washington would know it. People in rural parts might not know it. But we would know it. We don't have that now. That is very clear.

AI capabilities and the future of computer use

We have folks who say, this GPU kernel, this chip, I used to write it myself, I just have Claude do it. And so there's this enormous improvement in productivity.

Coding moves faster than other industries because the codebase provides a structured memory. A model can read the entire context and understand the system immediately. This eliminates the months of ramp up time usually required for a new human hire to learn a codebase. The model essentially learns the job instantly through the context window.

While some studies suggest AI might decrease developer productivity, Dario argues this does not match the reality at leading AI labs. The intense pressure to ship models and maintain revenue growth means there is no room for tools that do not work. He estimates that coding models currently provide a 15 to 20 percent speedup, up from just 5 percent half a year ago. This suggests a snowball effect where momentum is starting to build.

My model of the situation is there's an advantage that's gradually growing. I would say right now the coding models give maybe a 15, maybe 20% total factor speed up. Six months ago it was maybe 5% and so it didn't matter. It's now just getting to the point where it's like one of several factors that kind of matters.

AI on-the-job learning and the future of context scaling

AI models currently learn in two stages: pre-training and reinforcement learning. This process differs from human learning because it uses massive datasets rather than the experiences of a single lifetime. However, this method produces a model with a knowledge base that is much broader than any human. Dario points out that a pre-trained model knows more about Japanese history or electronics than he does. This broad capability may be enough for models to excel at most tasks without needing the specific on-the-job training that humans require.

If I look at a pre-trained model, it knows more about the history of samurai in Japan than I do. It knows more about baseball than I do. It knows more about low-pass filters and electronics. Its knowledge is way broader than mine.

Current models also use in-context learning to adapt to new information. This functions as a short-term form of on-the-job learning. A million-token context window allows a model to process as much information as a human could read in several weeks. Dario believes the current technology is already powerful enough to generate trillions of dollars in revenue and have significant national security implications. He expects the ability for a single model to learn continuously on the job will likely be solved within the next year or two.

A major focus for improvement is increasing the context length. While some observe a drop in quality when context windows get very large, this is often an engineering and inference challenge rather than a research failure. Serving long contexts requires managing memory in GPUs through the KV cache. The performance depends heavily on whether the model was actually trained at the long context length it is being asked to serve.

There is nothing preventing longer contexts from working. You just have to train at longer context and then learn to serve them at inference. Both of those are engineering problems that we are working on and that I would assume others are working on as well.

Timelines for highly capable AI systems

Highly capable AI systems that match or exceed human experts across various fields may arrive much sooner than many expect. Dario predicts that within one to three years, we could see what he calls a country of geniuses in a data center. While he considers a ten year timeline for this level of progress to be a near certainty, his personal hunch is that the shift will happen much faster. By late 2026 or early 2027, models might possess the intellectual capabilities of Nobel Prize winners and the ability to navigate digital interfaces just like humans.

I have a strong view, 99, 95% that like all this will happen in 10 years. Like that's, I think that's just a super safe bet. And then I have a hunch this is more like a 50, 50 thing, that it's going to be more like one to two, maybe more like one to three.

There is a distinct difference between technical progress and economic diffusion. Even if the technology achieves expert level status quickly, the time it takes for that progress to translate into trillions of dollars in revenue is uncertain. This uncertainty creates a significant financial risk for companies building massive data centers. If a company overestimates how quickly the market will adopt these tools, the massive investment in infrastructure could become a major liability.

We have this uncertainty, which is even if the technology goes as fast as I suspect that it will, we don't know exactly how fast it's going to drive revenue. We know it's coming, but with the way you buy these data centers, if you're off by a couple years. That can be ruinous.

Dario views the technical arrival of these systems as a starting gun rather than a finished product. The challenge for the industry is balancing the drive for technical scaling with the reality of how fast the broader economy can actually absorb and pay for such advanced intelligence.

The financial risks and physical limits of AI scaling

Curing all diseases through AI is a massive driver of economic value, but physical constraints remain. Even if an AI is a genius, the world still requires biological discovery, manufacturing, and regulatory processes. The COVID-19 vaccine rollout took over a year, and polio eradication has taken decades despite concentrated efforts. While AI will likely speed up this diffusion more than anything seen before, it still faces real world limits.

Clinical trials are going to go much faster than we're used to. But not instant, not infinitely fast.

Scaling compute requires predicting growth years in advance. If a company sees 10x revenue growth annually, it might be tempted to buy trillions of dollars in compute for the future. However, if that growth slows even slightly, the company faces bankruptcy. Dario notes that being responsible means avoiding a speculative approach to spending. Instead of chasing every possible upside, it is better to have a buffer. Anthropic focuses on an enterprise model where margins are healthier and revenue is less fickle than consumer products.

I could buy a trillion dollars of compute that starts at the end of 2027. And if my revenue is not a trillion dollars, if it is even 800 billion, there is no force on earth, there is no hedge on earth that could stop me from going bankrupt.

Even with a country of geniuses inside a data center, progress hits bottlenecks like clinical trials. Most trials fail today because drugs lack efficacy. AI can improve the success rate, making trials faster, but the process is not instant. These geniuses can also be directed toward improving AI technology itself. This creates self-reinforcing gains in progress as smart systems work to make themselves even smarter.

The financial risks of scaling AI compute

The decision to invest in massive amounts of compute is a high stakes balancing act. While buying more compute than a competitor can offer an advantage, it also carries the risk of financial ruin. If a company spends a trillion dollars on hardware and the predicted technological breakthrough arrives a year later than expected, the company could go bankrupt. Dario notes that being off by just one year can destroy a firm.

If you are off by only a year, you destroy yourselves. That is the balance. We are buying an amount that is comparable to what the biggest players in the game are buying. But if you ask why we have not signed for 10 trillion of compute starting in mid-2027, first of all, it cannot be produced. Second, what if the country of geniuses comes in mid-2028 instead of mid-2027? You go bankrupt.

The AI industry is currently using about 10 to 15 gigawatts of power for compute. This capacity is growing by roughly three times every year. By 2028, the industry might reach 100 gigawatts, and by 2029, it could hit 300 gigawatts. With each gigawatt costing between 10 billion and 15 billion dollars, the total investment will reach multiple trillions of dollars annually by the end of the decade. These projections suggest that the industry is moving toward the massive scale that experts predict.

The economics of AI profitability and compute allocation

Why doesn't everyone spend 100% of their compute on training and not serve any customers? It is because if they didn't get any revenue, they couldn't raise money. They couldn't do compute deals. They couldn't buy more compute the next year.

The economic path to AI profitability

While that specific model makes a profit, the company might immediately spend 10 billion dollars to train the next, more powerful version. This cycle keeps the company in the red until the scale up phase begins to level out and demand becomes more predictable.

Each model makes money, but the company loses money. The equilibrium I'm talking about is an equilibrium where we have the country of geniuses in a data center. But that model training scale up has equilibrated more.

The economic structure and future of AI frontier labs

Individual AI models can be profitable, but the primary task for a frontier lab is training the next version. If a lab stopped this cycle, it would lose its margins within months as competitors overtook its technology. Since compute will eventually represent a massive portion of economic output, growth will be limited by how much compute the economy can produce.

I think we may get 10 or 20% per year growth in the economy, but we're not going to get 300% growth in the economy. So I think in the end, if compute becomes the majority of what the economy produces, it's going to be capped by that.

The AI field is expected to function like the cloud industry rather than a monopoly. Cloud computing has a few major players because the cost of entry is extremely high. It requires immense capital and deep expertise. Even if someone had $100 billion to disrupt the industry, they would still need to match the skills of the incumbents while facing lower profit margins. Dario notes that models are more differentiated than cloud services. Models have different styles and excel at different types of coding or reasoning.

A major shift could happen if AI models begin to conduct their own research and development. If models can build the next generation of models, the entire economy might flatten. This would happen because the speed of progress would no longer be limited by human input. In this scenario, the traditional advantages that companies hold might disappear as the ability to build and innovate spreads everywhere.

Once the AI models are building the next AI models and building everything else, the whole economy will kind of go at the same pace.

AI progress in robotics and software engineering

I think we may get to the point in like a year or two where the models can just do end-to-end software engineering. That's a whole sphere of human activity that we're just saying models can do it.

Future business models and the internal birth of Claude Code

Future pricing models will probably evolve because the value of an AI's output varies wildly. A model suggesting a simple computer restart is worth very little. However, a model suggesting a specific molecular change for a new drug could be worth millions of dollars. This suggests a future where users might pay for results or even for labor by the hour rather than just paying for the number of tokens generated.

Claude Code emerged from this culture of internal experimentation. It began as a tool called Claude CLI to help researchers at Anthropic work faster. Dario encouraged the team to use their own models for research acceleration. When the tool saw rapid adoption across hundreds of employees, it became clear that they had found product market fit. This internal feedback loop allowed the team to refine the tool based on their own needs as developers before launching it to the public.

Internally was the thing that kind of everyone was using and it was seeing fast internal adoption. And I looked at it and I said probably we should launch this externally. It's seen such fast adoption within Anthropic. Like coding is a lot of what we do. So it looks like we already have product market fit.

Governance in a world of proliferating AI

Ultimately, global cooperation between governments may be the only way to build societal structures where defenses are possible. The technological leap is so significant that it is difficult to fully anticipate the landscape in advance. We may eventually need to work with AIs themselves to design these new systems of checks and balances.

The challenge of regulating rapidly evolving AI

A recent Tennessee bill proposed banning AI from providing emotional support. This kind of legislation often stems from a lack of understanding of what AI models actually do. The idea that we would ban states from doing anything for 10 years, and people said they had a plan for federal government, but there was no proposal on the table. Given the serious dangers around things like biological weapons and bioterrorism, 10 years is an eternity. I think that's a crazy thing to do.

Dario argues against a long-term moratorium on state AI laws if there is no federal alternative ready. A decade is too long to wait when existential risks are on the horizon. Instead of a total ban on state action, a better approach would be federal preemption.
